Geographical location
Champagne is the most northern wine producing area in France. Located
less than 120 miles from Paris, it spans on the counties of Marne, Aube,
Aisne, Haute-Marne and Seine-et-Marne.
Only a part of the German vineyards knows a more northern location than
Champagne. The temperature of grapes of Champagne is about 10.4 Celsius
degrees. Moreover the grapes don't mature with temperatures below 9.6
Celsius degrees.
However Champagne winegrowers have remedies to their problems. A very
old system of "chaufferetes" (still used today - Fuel heaters) allows
the vineyards not to freeze during the very rude Champagne
winters.
